01 / The course

Does jazz fascinate you, yet still feel a little complicated or out of reach?

SingAbility Jazz is a practical course for singers who want to understand the foundations of jazz, develop their sense of rhythm and learn to perform jazz standards with greater confidence and stylistic awareness.

Over eight weeks, we will explore what makes jazz sound and feel like jazz: how to find the pulse, sing swing and bossa nova, choose suitable repertoire, shape a melody and collaborate with an accompanist.

This course does not focus on vocal technique. Instead, we will concentrate on the language, rhythm, repertoire and interpretation of jazz.

02 / Who it is for

This course is for you if…

  • 01You have some previous singing experience and can sing in tune.
  • 02You are curious about jazz but do not know where to begin.
  • 03You would like to sing jazz standards and understand how they are structured.
  • 04You want to develop your sense of rhythm and learn to sing swing and bossa nova.
  • 05You want to become more confident performing and learn how to prepare for a jam session.

Previous jazz experience and the ability to read music are not required. The course is not suitable for complete beginners who are still learning to sing in tune or for singers whose primary goal is to develop their vocal technique.

03 / What you will learn

Eight weeks.
A clear system.
Real music.

01

Understand the essential concepts of jazz singing and jazz standards and know how to approach learning them.

02

Have a stronger sense of pulse and rhythm and distinguish between swing and bossa nova.

03

Expand your repertoire and develop your ability to sing and begin varying the original melody.

04

Experiment with improvisation and receive practical tools for developing it further.

05

Know how to communicate a song’s tempo, key, form and feel to an accompanist.

06

Prepare at least two jazz standards to perform with a live accompanist or a jam-session band.

Additional meeting

Jam
session

After the eight course sessions, we will attend a jam session together. You will have the opportunity to perform one of your prepared jazz standards with a live band.

The jam session is not an exam or a compulsory final performance. It is a supported opportunity to take the next step from the safety of the classroom into a real musical setting.

The final class will take place with a professional pianist or guitarist.

04 / A small and supportive group

68

Room to sing,
listen and grow.

The small group size gives everyone the opportunity to sing actively, ask questions and receive individual feedback. We will also learn by listening to and supporting one another. Jazz is, by nature, a form of communication—and the best way to learn it is by making music together.
